THE UNITED NATIONS
-
formed to keep peace between nations
-so nations will solve their problems around a table instead of the battlefield
-US, USSR, GB, France, China are the five permanent countries in the United Nations that were Allies all had veto power
-USSR and China vs. US, France, and GB
CONTAINMENT
-Iron Curtain falls on Europe(communism spreads)
-United States should contain communism

-One way the United States tried to contain communism was through the Truman Doctrine

THE TRUMAN DOCTRINE
-
created in 1947
-provided assistance to any democratic country that was threatened by internal or external forces.
-redirected American foreign policy
THE MARSHALL PLAN
-
Give countries help so that communism won't spread there
-Marshall refered to it as the European Recovery Plan
-Marshall suggested that Europe set up a program for the reconstruction with assistance from the U.S.

THE BERLIN AIRLIFT
-Germany was divided into four sections, for the U.S, SU, Great Britain and France.
-The Western Powers united as W. Germany, which threatened Stalin
-Stalin wanted to take over Berlin, the capitol of Germany, which was also split
-Stalin's forces blockaded the whole city
-To supply Berlin with food and water, Truman used a huge airlift
-Stalin finally ended the blockade a year later
-Germany was democratic W. Germany and communist E. Germany
NATO
-Stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organization
-Developed because of the spreading communist threat in E. Europe
-US, Canada, and W. European nations were included
-Soviet and E. Europe formed Warsaw Pact in response

-Civil war in China
-Communists vs anticommunist Nationalists
-Communist powers win, China becomes communist country
-jobs are lost, accused of being disloyal to China
-U.S fears communism more than ever because of threat in both Korea and China

MCCARTHYISM
-McCarthy accused many people of being communists, he even had a list of names, but it was never proven
-McCarthy ordered a hunt for these people, many were falsely accused and lost their jobs
-McCarthy was harshly criticized by the American public and by the government
THE SPACE RACE
-Soviets launch Sputnik, the first space satellite
-Americans are very surprised and become afraid that the Soviets had a missile that was powerful enough to reach the US
-The US raced to launch a satellite into space
