By 1967, the government was drafting 30,000 American men a month to serve in Vietnam, a war that the majority of Americans thought was a mistake. The conscript army was mainly composed of poorer teenagers who didn't have access to the exemptions from military that the wealthier Americans did.

Herbicides such as Agent Orange were used to kill plants, that served as cover for the Viet Congs. Agent Orange was proved to be harmful to humans as well as the plants. This was a very controversial tactic used by the United States.
